Peter Higgs – the man who changed our view of the Universe

Peter Higgs is a renowned physicist who is best known for his work on the Higgs boson particle, which he theorized in the 1960s. His groundbreaking theory helped explain why particles have mass and revolutionized our understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe.

Before Higgs’ work, the Standard Model of particle physics could not fully explain why particles have mass. Higgs proposed that a field permeates the entire universe, interacting with particles and giving them mass. This field is what we now know as the Higgs field, and the particle associated with it is the Higgs boson.

In 2012, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland discovered the Higgs boson, confirming Higgs’ theory and earning him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. This discovery was a monumental achievement in the field of physics and solidified Higgs’ place in scientific history.

Thanks to Peter Higgs’ work, we now have a more complete understanding of the universe and the fundamental forces that govern it. His contributions have had a lasting impact on the field of physics and continue to inspire scientists around the world.
